In 2010, April Webster and Nathan Fishbourne made history as the youngest parents in Britain. At just 13 years old, April discovered she was pregnant, and by the time their son, Jamie, was born, they had both turned 14. Their story quickly became a media sensation, drawing a mix of shock, judgment, and sympathy from the public.
The headlines painted a picture of young love and unexpected parenthood, but once the media frenzy faded, what happened to the teenage parents who captured the nation’s attention?
The Unexpected Pregnancy
April and Nathan first met as classmates at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly, South Wales. Like many teenage relationships, their romance started innocently enough but soon took an unexpected turn when April became pregnant at just 13.
She found out about her pregnancy one day before her 14th birthday, and the news shocked her family. April admitted she had kept the relationship a secret, feeling too embarrassed to tell her parents about her situation.
According to both April and Nathan, they had not used contraception, with Nathan stating that he had tried it once but didn’t like it. This decision ultimately led to a life-changing moment for both of them.
Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron, were furious at first.
“I had a real go at him and told him he had been stupid. But we can’t undo what has happened and will now accept Jamie into our family. There’s no way we’ll turn our backs on him,” Nathan’s father, Ron, told The Sun.
Despite the initial anger, both families eventually rallied together to support the young couple through their journey into parenthood. April’s mother, Maria, who was just 36 at the time, stood by her daughter’s side.
“It was a big shock at first, but we let April make the decision on whether to go through with it,” she shared.
Jamie’s Birth and Early Challenges
In November 2010, April gave birth to Jamie via cesarean section. Weighing 8 lbs 14 oz, Jamie’s arrival was not without complications. He was born with a malformed esophagus, making it difficult for him to feed.
Doctors performed a successful operation, and after 11 days in the hospital, Jamie was declared healthy and allowed to go home.
By the time British tabloids picked up the story, Jamie was already four weeks old. April was living with her parents, where she shared a room with her 17-year-old sister, Robyn, who helped with bottle-feeding Jamie. Nathan, meanwhile, lived a few miles away with his own family.
Adjusting to Parenthood
Despite their young age, April was determined to be the best mother possible.
“Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mom for him. He’s perfect, and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants,” she said.
Nathan had his own plans for co-parenting.
“I’d love to have him at weekends – and April can have him five days during the week,” he suggested.
However, uncertainty surrounded their relationship.
“We’re having a cooling-off period,” April admitted at the time, adding that she wasn’t sure if they would stay together.
Life After Their Breakup
By 2014, April confirmed that she and Nathan had officially broken up.
“I broke up with Nathan about three years ago; we’re not really in contact,” she said. “I don’t really want to be in contact with him. When I first had Jamie, I hoped we might stay together. There are no regrets, though.”
April had initially planned to continue her education, but she never took her GCSEs, which are equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma.
“I’m not in school or working. I’m just looking after Jamie, and everything is going amazingly with him,” she shared.
Luckily, April’s family remained incredibly supportive, ensuring she had help raising Jamie.
“My mom and sister love having Jamie in the house. He’s fun. He goes to school in the mornings, which gives me time to chill out. I might go to college and take some exams when Jamie is older. I’m not planning on having another baby soon, though,” she added.
Where Are They Now?
Today, April’s life looks very different. She is now a proud mother of three, raising Jamie alongside her two younger children, Rowan David and Ava Lianne. She has also found love again and is in a happy relationship with Jake Jones.
Now 28 years old, April has embraced her role as a mother and frequently shares updates on social media about her growing family.
Nathan’s life has also taken a positive turn. In February 2023, he got engaged to his partner, Samantha, and has since built his own family, raising several children.
Overcoming Challenges and Moving Forward
Teen pregnancy is incredibly challenging, bringing social stigma, financial struggles, and emotional hurdles. However, April and Nathan have both managed to build happy, fulfilling lives despite their early start to parenthood.
Jamie, now a teenager himself, has grown up with two loving parents, even though they are no longer together. Their dedication to his well-being shows that, with support and determination, young parents can create positive futures for their children.
A Story of Strength and Growth
April and Nathan’s journey serves as a reminder that young parents face unique struggles, but they also have the ability to create meaningful and successful lives.
April has flourished as a mother, and Nathan has also found happiness in his own way. What once was a tabloid sensation has transformed into a story of resilience, growth, and transformation.
We wish them and their families all the best for the future!
