Thrifted Washboard Farmhouse Makeover

Thrift stores are gold mines of hidden treasures, just waiting for someone to give them new life. Recently, I discovered an old, rustic washboard at my local thrift shop. The glass and wood frame, though weathered, had incredible potential for a farmhouse-inspired makeover. With a bit of creativity, a few supplies, and some elbow grease, I transformed this forgotten laundry tool into a charming piece of décor that now adds a touch of rustic elegance to my home. Here’s how I did it!

 Cleaning and Prepping the Washboard

The first step in any upcycling project is cleaning the item thoroughly. Since this washboard had been well-used in its day, it needed a good scrub to reveal its true beauty beneath layers of dirt and grime.

Materials Needed:

  • Hot, soapy water (I used Dawn dish soap)
  • Kitchen sponge or soft-bristle brush
  • Shish kabob stick or old toothbrush

I took the washboard to my kitchen sink and filled it with hot, soapy water. I scrubbed the surface thoroughly, paying special attention to the crevices where years of lint and dirt had settled. Using a shish kabob stick, I carefully cleaned out all the buildup in the corners and crevices. Once clean, I rinsed it well and left it to dry overnight.

 Adding a Weathered Look

After cleaning, I wanted to give the washboard an aged, weathered appearance to match the farmhouse aesthetic I had in mind. For this, I used a wood accelerator to create a gray, worn look that would blend perfectly with my farmhouse décor.

Materials Needed:

  • Rust-Oleum Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator (Gray)
  • Soft paintbrush

I applied the wood accelerator evenly, watching as the natural wood tone quickly transformed into a lovely, weathered gray. The tint enhanced the wood grain and gave the washboard a subtle rustic charm that felt both authentic and elegant. I let the washboard dry completely before moving on to the next step.

 Adding Farmhouse-Inspired Transfers

One of my favorite ways to personalize upcycled pieces is with decorative transfers. To add a touch of farmhouse style to this washboard, I used a transfer from the Redesign With Prima collection.

Materials Needed:

  • Redesign With Prima Everyday Farmhouse décor transfer (Rosewood Farm)
  • Application stick (included with the transfer)

I selected a portion of the transfer that would fit perfectly on the washboard. After centering it on the wood, I used the included application stick to rub the design onto the surface. This simple yet elegant addition elevated the washboard from a functional laundry item to a beautiful piece of wall art.

 Conditioning and Protecting the Wood

With the transfer applied, I wanted to protect the wood and give it a soft sheen. I used a wood conditioning product to enhance the natural beauty of the wood and provide a long-lasting, water-resistant finish.

Materials Needed:

  • Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta

This blend of natural ingredients—including hemp seed oil and beeswax—added a luxurious finish to the wood. I applied it sparingly, allowing the oils to soak in and nourish the wood. Not only did this step protect the washboard, but it also softened the texture, making it smooth and pleasant to the touch.

Adding a Metal Container for Functionality

To make the washboard not only decorative but also functional, I decided to attach a small metal container at the bottom. This addition would allow the washboard to serve as a planter or even a storage space for small items like clothespins or twine.

Materials Needed:

  • Divided metal container (found at Hobby Lobby)
  • Short screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill (optional, for pre-drilling holes)

I enlisted my husband’s help to avoid damaging the glass while attaching the container. We measured carefully and drilled holes for the screws, securing the metal container in place. This gave the piece both style and practicality, perfect for holding a small potted plant or some rustic trinkets.

 Adding the Final Touches

With the metal container securely attached, it was time to add the finishing touches. I found a small potted plant at Target’s Bullseye Playground, which fit perfectly in the container. I also added some jute, vintage clothespins, and a sprig of greenery to complete the farmhouse look. These small details brought the whole piece together, giving it a warm, inviting feel.

Conclusion: A Rustic Transformation Worth Every Minute

Transforming this old washboard into a stunning piece of farmhouse décor was an incredibly rewarding project. It allowed me to tap into my creativity while breathing new life into an otherwise forgotten item. The end result is a unique, rustic piece that adds warmth and character to my home, showing just how beautiful upcycling can be.

If you’ve found a thrift store treasure waiting to be revived, don’t hesitate to roll up your sleeves and start your own makeover. With a little time, effort, and the right materials, you can transform an ordinary object into something extraordinary. Happy upcycling!
